April 2019 – Cherry Tree & Chestnut Trees

Taking care of of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

Cherry Trees
Cherry trees make beautiful specimen plants. They are generally short-lived to about 20 years because they are prone to a variety insects and diseases. This does not deter the tree from being used in gardens as its attractiveness far outweighs its short life-span. Quite useful for adding early spring color to a landscape, cherries also sometimes attract birds with their small single-seeded fruits produced during the summer. Spring blossom color, leaf color and fall color all vary from species to species.

Chestnut Trees
There are about five species of chestnut native to North America. It was, at one time, a prominent hardwood tree in the eastern United States. However, in the late 19th century, a fungus known as chestnut blight, introduced accidentally from Asia, destroyed most of the native stands. The wood of the chestnut had many commercial uses ranging from furniture to railway ties.
